Despite ‘slight differences,’ Medialdea mourns death of ‘friend’ Gina Lopez

MANILA, Philippines — Despite their differences on the mining operations in the Philippines, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea mourned the death of former environment secretary Regina “Gina” Lopez.

“We extend our condolences to the entire family and shall offer prayers for the eternal repose of her soul. Rest in peace, Gina,” Medialdea said in a text message on Monday.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said Lopez died Monday at the age of 65 after she succumbed to brain cancer.

During her short stint as environment secretary, Lopez once slammed Medialdea for reversing her order requiring mining firms to set up a multimillion trust fund for farmers before being allowed to transport their stockpiles.

Lopez, who ordered the closure and suspension of some mining firms in the country, had accused Medialdea of working for business interests.

“We had some slight differences on certain policies during our stint as members of the cabinet but remained as friends,” Medialdea said.

President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Lopez as head of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources but her appointment was repeatedly rejected by the powerful Commission on Appointments. /je
